U.S. Citizenship

US Citizenship

There are various pathways, options and special conditions for obtaining U.S. citizenship. With changes in immigration law happening quickly, you may need legal help to complete the process. Generally, you should never attempt to resolve citizenship issues on your own, nor should you work on having your child declared a citizen on your own. Mistakes can cause undue delays, expenses, and in certain cases, rejection of your application and arrest by immigration authorities.

If one or both of your parents are U.S. Citizens, you may have a claim to citizenship. This area of immigration is complex and requires a thoughtful analysis to determine if it’s worth your time, effort and expense to pursue “derivative citizenship”. Our attorneys can meet one-on-one with you to evaluate your situation. Contact us to learn more.

Naturalization

Derivative Citizenship

When a child is born to a U.S. parent who resides outside of the United States, particularly out of wedlock, it may be necessary to apply for derivative citizenship. Before filing any paperwork, it is important you consult with an experienced immigration attorney. Children born overseas to two U.S. citizen parents are automatically granted U.S. citizenship. However, if one parent is a citizen, and one is not, U.S. citizenship could become more complex.
